About Us

General Gabler’s Theatre was founded in Seattle by Helen T. Mariam and Natalie Schmidt. We primarily produce the plays of Henrik Ibsen using non-normative casting that prioritizes women and non-binary actors.

Why an Ibsen theatre?

“It is not surprising that most of the Ibsen pioneers have been women; in nearly every country they were the first to introduce his plays.”

Eva Le Gallienne, legendary actor, director, and translator

We are drawn to the works of Henrik Ibsen, and we know we’re not alone! Ibsen’s dramas have inspired artists and captivated audiences for nearly two centuries. The sharp edge with which his plays cut through the mores of his time can still be wielded to expose what lurks behind polite society today. We’re excited by the potential of non-traditional gender casting to explore Ibsen’s critiques of power relations for modern audiences.

While Ibsen’s words no longer shock in the 21st century, they remain brilliant and compelling. And we feel compelled to bring them off the page.
